Choice of Steel Type for Your Floor Planters
- Corten Steel: A durable steel that develops a rusty surface over time, giving it a rustic and natural appearance. The rust layer protects the material from further corrosion, making it ideal for outdoor use. To accelerate the rusting of floor planters, you can spray them with saltwater. This creates a nice rusty patina in about a week.
- Galvanized Steel: Steel coated with a zinc layer to prevent rust. It is durable and corrosion-resistant but does not provide the same aesthetic patina as Corten steel for floor planters. Instead, it has a decorative gray-blue surface.
- Acid-resistant Stainless Steel: A corrosion-resistant and durable material that does not rust, providing a polished, modern look. It is an exclusive option for stylish outdoor planters.
- Regular Steel with Paint Coating: Painting provides extra protection against corrosion for your floor planters and can be customized in various colors. We offer RAL Classic as a standard option (RAL + four digits). For outdoor use, we use a special primer to ensure long-lasting durability, which also means a price difference between indoor and outdoor coating. For indoor use, many plant owners opt to instead plastic-wrap the planter to minimize cost rather than priming it. This option protects the planter from moisture and prevents potential damage, while keeping costs down. Painting extends the manufacturing process by approximately two weeks.
Choose 3 mm steel for smaller plants, indoor use, or when you’re looking for a lighter and more affordable solution for your floor planters. 4 mm steel is a better option for larger plants, heavy trees, or outdoor use, as it provides increased durability and stability. It also gives a more robust and exclusive appearance. For commercial properties, we have manufactured planters up to 8 mm steel, to meet higher demands for durability and design.
Size Tips for Manufacturing Floor Planters
When selecting the right size for your floor planter, it is essential to adapt it to the plant’s needs. For small plants, a planter with a diameter of
20-30 cm is recommended, while medium-sized plants thrive in planters with a diameter of
40-50 cm. For larger plants or trees, the planter should have a diameter of
70 cm or more to provide ample space for the root system.
The depth of the planter should be at least twice the size of the plant’s root ball. For small plants, the depth should be
20-40 cm, while larger trees require a depth of
70-100 cm to support healthy growth and stability. Also, consider using a layer of draining material, such as expanded clay (Leca), at 10-15% of the planter’s volume to ensure good drainage and prevent root rot.
